Although it’s only been confirmed for the Chinese market so far, it’s highly likely that the Volkswagen ID.6 electric SUV will make the leap to North America. The ID.6 is larger than the ID.4, putting it into contention with mid-size SUVs. It has three rows of seats and seating for up to seven riders. Rear-wheel drive will likely be standard, but a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive arrangement will probably be optional.
It’s currently unclear how big of a battery Volkswagen will offer here, but in China buyers can choose either a 58.0- or 77.0-kWh pack, with a driving range of up to 365 miles with the larger of the two. Given the popularity of three-row crossovers, VW would be wise to bring the ID.6 to market soon, and we expect to see it as a 2023 model.

What’s New for 2023?
The ID.6 is all-new and will be the largest of Volkswagen’s ID models when it goes on sale. More information should be available closer to the SUV’s on-sale date.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
Like the ID.4, the ID.6 is expected to be offered in base, Pro, and Pro S trims and may also be offered in a limited-run 1stEdition model for its first model year. We are estimating the prices above and won’t know exactly how much the SUV will cost or which features will be standard or optional until closer to its launch.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance
Volkswagen hasn’t released specifics on the ID.6’s powertrain, but we expect the SUV to be offered in both rear- and all-wheel-drive configurations with one or two electric motors providing propulsion. When we get a chance to test drive the ID.6, we’ll update this story with driving impressions and test results.
Range, Charging, and Battery Life
In China, the ID.6 will be available with either a 58.0- or 77.0-kWh battery pack, the latter of which is said to provide up to 365 miles of driving range per charge. American versions may be offered with just one of the two packs or perhaps one of a different size.
Still, expect a lower estimated range figure based on the EPA’s test cycle. Fast-charging technology will undoubtedly be standard, as it is in the smaller ID.4.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
Three rows of seats put the ID.6 into contention with the more expensive Tesla Model X and the Rivian R1S as a family-friendly SUV with an all-electric powertrain. All models will likely come with a panoramic glass roof and will offer a large 12.0-inch infotainment touchscreen for much of the car’s controls.
As more information becomes available, we’ll update this story with more details about:
- Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
- Infotainment and Connectivity
- Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
- Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

2022 Volkswagen Golf R Pricing, Review, and Specs
2022 Volkswagen Golf R Pricing, Review, and Specs
The 2022 Volkswagen Golf R looks ready to overthrow the hottest hatchbacks that have been hogging headlines during its absence from our shores. Spawned from the improvements made to the upcoming Mk8 Golf GTI, the R-rated model has a more powerful 315-hp turbo-four and an all-wheel-drive system with a drift mode.
While VW’s latest and greatest high performance hatch still isn’t as showy as rivals like the Honda Civic Type R and Hyundai Veloster N, its more sophisticated appearance should only help catch its opponents off guard while attracting buyers who want a fast small car with low-key looks. A slew of exclusive equipment and subtle design details also work to separate it from the GTI, with which it shares a modern interior and myriad technology.

What’s New for 2022?
After being on hiatus since the 2019 model year, the Golf R returns for 2022. Its resurrection follows the release of the eighth generation Golf GTI. With VW planning to stop selling the regular Golf hatchback and station wagons here, that leaves the GTI and the R as the only versions America will get. Thankfully, both are favorites of ours.
Pricing and What Model to Buy
Volkswagen says it will offer a single Golf R model that’s loaded with all the best equipment. This suggests its starting price will be a couple of thousand dollars higher than before when it hits U.S. dealership in late 2021.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance
Under the Golf R’s hood is a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four cylinder that makes 315 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque—up from 288 hp and 280 lb-ft in the last generation R. The engine pairs with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The standard 4Motion all-wheel-drive system features a rear differential that can actively distribute torque between the left and right rear wheels for improved handling. Including stability control also to improve the handling around sharp South Florida turns and also dealing with the rain and wet road conditions.
The Golf R’s selectable drive modes (Comfort, Sport, Race, Special, Drift, and Individual) can be activated by pressing an “R” button on the steering wheel. We’ve sampled the hatch’s Drift mode, which proved entertaining on slick surfaces, but it won’t replace a rear-drive muscle car’s fun-factor.
Every model comes with a sport exhaust system, variable ratio steering, and larger front disc brakes than before. It also rides on a set of 19-inch wheels shod with summer performance tires. During our first drive in Germany, the Golf R showed off the quickness and relentlessness of its strong engine, reactive dual-clutch automatic, and intelligent all-wheel-drive system. The version we drove was also equipped with the optional Performance package that adds two more drive modes, including an entertaining Drift mode that allows some tail-sliding antics.
We must say this is one little hot hatch that’s packing 315 hp under the hood that will soon be here in North America also known as the United States.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
VW hasn’t released the city and highway ratings for the 2022 Golf R. Once those figures are made available, and we have a chance to run it on our 75-mph highway fuel economy route, which is part of our extensive testing regimen, we can evaluate the high performance hatchback’s real-world mpg. For more information about the Golf R’s fuel economy, visit the EPA’s website.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo Space
The Golf R mimics the GTI’s new cabin design, which provides a sportier aesthetic than the last generation Golf. Both have a thick-rimmed steering wheel with touch sensitive controls that operate a 10.2-inch digital gauge cluster with configurable layouts. Unlike the GTI, the Golf R isn’t available with plaid seat inserts, but it does boast bolstered front seats wrapped in nappa leather. These exclusive buckets have blue and carbon-look accents in the side sections as well as a blue “R” logo in the backrest.
The other interior features include ambient lighting with 30 colors, stainless-steel pedals, and more carbon-look trim on the dashboard. The new Golf R also has impressive cargo space and a comfortable back seat.

Infotainment and Connectivity
As seen on the new GTI, the Golf R’s infotainment system will run through a 10.0-inch touchscreen situated in the center of the dashboard. Its secondary controls include touch sensitive sliders versus physical knobs and buttons. Along with the obligatory charging ports, the system should be available with a Harman/Kardon premium stereo. We also expect popular content such as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.
Safety and Driver Assistance Features
We expect the next-gen Golf R to offer as much or more driver assistance technology as its predecessor, which suggests blind-spot monitoring and lane-keeping assist will be on the roster. For more information about the Golf R’s crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features will likely include:
- Standard forward collision warning and automated emergency braking
- Standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert
- Standard lane departure warning and lane-keeping assist
Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
Although VW’s powertrain warranty isn’t tops among classmates, both its limited warranty and complimentary scheduled maintenance are among the best.
- Limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
- Powertrain warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
- Complimentary maintenance is covered for two years or 20,000 miles
2022 Volkswagen Tiguan Review, Specs, and Pricing
2022 Volkswagen Tiguan Review, Specs, and Pricing
Volkswagen’s Tiguan is a European take on a South Florida favorite class of vehicles known as the SUV. It offers more athletic handling than many of its rivals, and its cabin has a restrained vibe with plenty of trendy technology features. While the Tiguan hasn’t proved to be particularly quick at our test track, the turbocharged four-cylinder engine performs dutifully, sounds expensive, and will pass muster with most buyers.
Although the Tiguan is sold in global markets, Florida dealerships only peddle the long-wheelbase model, which means an optional third row of seats is available for those who need it. That kind of cabin flexibility is something that key rivals such as the Honda CR-V, the Mazda CX-5, and the Toyota RAV4 don’t offer.

What’s New for 2022?
Volkswagen has given its compact SUV a handsome styling refresh for 2022 to help it look at home alongside the restyled Atlas and new Atlas Cross Sport mid-size SUVs. New LED headlamps, revised grille and bumpers, and new wheel designs give the 2022 Tiguan a more modern appearance. The Tiguan’s cabin receives updates as well, in the form of a new steering wheel with touch sensitive controls. Heated seats and a digital gauge display are now standard across the lineup.
All models except the base S also receive a new touch sensitive climate control panel, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and a semi autonomous driving mode that VW calls Travel Assist. The Tiguan’s third row of seats will remain an optional feature. Expect the 2022 Tiguan to appear in VW showrooms in Fall, 2021.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
Volkswagen hasn’t released pricing for the 2022 Tiguan yet, but our estimates here should be close. Stepping up to the mid-range SE trim adds 18-inch wheels, a power operated rear liftgate, lane-keeping assist, and the new semi autonomous driving mode.
A panoramic sunroof will be an option on the SE, but we don’t yet have a full run-down of other optional features. For a sportier appearance, consider the SE R-Line Black model, which swaps 18s for 19-inch wheels and adds black exterior trim and a sport steering wheel.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance
Under the hood of every 2022 Tiguan is a turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 184 horsepower; front-wheel drive is standard but Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system is optional. This is a sporty, fun-to-drive SUV with a smooth, willing engine and a well coordinated automatic transmission.
Like most of its competitors it’s far from fast, but it makes up for that with a taut ride, athletic handling, and responsive steering that recall VW’s well-respected GTI hot hatchback. The Tiguan’s brake-pedal action is soft and it doesn’t match up to the firm, progressive pedals we enjoy in other members of VW’s family tree.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
The EPA hasn’t released fuel economy numbers for the 2022 Tiguan yet, nor have we had the chance to test it on our 200-mile highway fuel economy route. We expect similar EPA fuel economy estimates as the 2020 model, which earned ratings as high as 29 mpg highway. For more information about the Tiguan’s fuel economy, visit the EPA’s website.
We drove the new 2022 VW Tiguan around South Florida down and around Martin County and up through the Treasure Coast just north to Port Saint Lucie, FL and drove around for about an hour. The compact crossover didn’t give us any problems as we enjoyed our South Florida drive. We passed a few Golf gti’s and waved to them as we passed them since the Tiguan produces 184 horsepower.

Loading the family into the 2022 Tiguan at Stuart Beach.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
The Tiguan’s interior is classically Volkswagen, which is to say that it is simple and functional but not particularly stylish. Others offer more legroom in the second row, but the Tiguan is one of the only vehicles in the class that can be had with seating for seven. The Tiguan comes standard with cloth seating and partial power adjustment for the front seats. Opting into more expensive versions can net full power adjustment for the driver, faux-leather seating, and a panoramic sunroof.
With just 12 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, the Tiguan simply can’t be a hauling vehicle when the third row is in use. With the third row folded, the Tiguan’s cargo measurements put it about in the middle of this class for raw space. With all the seats folded, we fit 19 of our carry-on boxes in the Tiguan, less than we stuffed inside key rivals including the CR-V.

Infotainment and Connectivity
Volkswagen’s infotainment system is sleek and features touch buttons integrated into a large glass screen. The system comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so drivers who prefer their smartphone’s familiar interface to Volkswagen’s system are in luck; a Wi-Fi hotspot is standard. A 480-watt nine-speaker Fender audio system is available for audiophiles, but only in upper trims. All models come with either an 8.0- or 10.3-inch digital gauge display which can be reconfigured to display a variety of information.
Safety and Driver Assistance Features
Forward collision alert with automatic braking and a blind-spot warning system are standard. For more information about the Tiguan’s crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features include:
- Standard automated emergency braking with forward collision warning
- Available lane departure warning with lane-keeping assist
- Available adaptive cruise control with semi autonomous driving mode
Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
What was previously the industry’s best bumper to bumper warranty at six years and 72,000 miles of coverage has been shortened to four years or 50,000 miles. To help make that reduced coverage a little easier to handle, all new Volkswagens offer two years of regularly scheduled maintenance included at no charge.
- Limited warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
- Powertrain warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
- Complimentary maintenance is covered for 2 years or 20,000 miles
